Aluminum Wheel Hubs

Aluminum wheel hubs are aesthetically pleasing, safe, and comfortable and have therefore gained popularity among car owners.

A wheel hub, also known as a rim, is a barrel-shaped metal component with its center mounted on an axle that supports the tire in its inner contours. Wheel hub carries both the bodywork and the safety of the driver and accompanying passengers.

Wheel hubs are mainly steel wheels and alloy wheels. Compared to steel wheels, aluminum wheel hubs are more precise, safer, more comfortable, and more energy-efficient, and are now used in almost all models.

Aluminum Alloy Wheel Forming Process

Alloy wheels are generally made of aluminum alloys and are mainly formed by gravity casting, low-pressure casting, flow die casting, and forging.

1. Forging Molding

Forged wheel mold casting uses an ultra-high-pressure die to press the entire metal into shape in a single pass, which is the process of solid change. Therefore, mold form forged wheels have the advantages of high strength, good corrosion resistance, smooth and detailed surfaces, and precise dimensions.

Forged wheel mold making is more expensive to produce than the casting process. Car manufacturers still mainly use cast wheel molds in most cases, with a small number of luxury high-end sports cars equipped with forging wheel molds.

2. Gravity Casting Molding

Gravity casting is an older casting process, which involves pouring molten aluminum metal into a mold under gravity to obtain a casting.

A metal gravity wheel mold can be poured several times. Gravity casting is a low-cost, simple and efficient production process.

3. Low-pressure Casting Molding

Low-pressure casting is a casting method in which an aluminum alloy is filled into a mold under pressure and solidified and crystallized under pressure to obtain a casting.

Low-pressure casting has become the preferred process for the production of high-quality aluminum alloy wheels. Compared with gravity casting, low-pressure casting produces a denser wheel with higher strength and a brighter surface, which can achieve lightweight while controlling costs, and the yield is above 90%.

4. Flow Die-casting Aluminum Forming

Flow die-casting aluminum forming is the direct pouring of a certain amount of aluminum alloy liquid into the cavity of a flow forming mold design wheel mold, which fills, forms and crystallizes, solidifies, and produces a certain amount of deformation during the crystallization process.

The aluminum alloy crystallizes and solidifies directly under pressure to form the wheel hub, so the flow form molds are dense and do not produce casting defects such as porosity and shrinkage.
